REPORT: The Australian Media Organisation.
The two media organisations that were reviewed are ABC (News) and Channel 7 (News). The ABC Company is state owned. It branches off into different fields of Media such as television, radio and online services. Channel 7 belongs to a bigger organisation. They are owned by Seven West Media (controlled by Kerry Stokes). Along with Channel 7, Seven West Media owns 67% of Hybrid Television Services and 33% of Sky News Australia. On the print media side of Seven West Media, they own magazine publisher, Pacific Magazines. Seven West Media also owns 50% of Yahoo!7, the other half being owned by Yahoo. Seven West Media has more ownership of a variety of Media sources. ABC is more restricted. That being said, even if ABC News was to get a slightly higher viewers rating, Channel 7 News still has other sources to rely on, meaning they can still have an audience and publicity. If viewers stick to one organisation, they will only be given one perspective of any political and social situation. They also need money to be able to make more money for a profit. To obtain this money, Channel 7 would have had to look for sponsorship, companies and brands interested in buying advertisement slots, even wealthy companies and individuals who will buy shares and invest. ABC is a non-commercial organisation meaning that the government funds it. They receive an annual budget of $1.22 billion and with this money the corporation offers Australia TV, Radio and other online sources. Being funded by the government, ABC is trusted to be reliable and offer quality in branches such as education and cultural diversity.
