In PH 420, we are assigned weekly reading assignments from either the text or online resources. Therefore, layered reading has been extremely beneficial for this class since the online resources are often 20 pages. I prepare for layered reading by first looking through the chapter and reading the objectives, vocabulary, summaries, and briefly looking over the figures. After I have a sense of the topic for the chapter, I begin quickly skimming the chapter. However, I realized that if I skim a large number of pages, I begin to read the material instead. Therefore, I read about two or three pages at a time. After completely skimming those few pages, I return to highlight key words or vocabulary that I found to be important or essential to understanding the reading. I try to avoid highlighting entire sentences since this causes the page to become visually unappealing, which negatively affects my learning. Once I have finished highlighting, I continue this pattern until I finish the entire assigned reading. At this time, I have an adequate understanding of the chapter; however, I return back to the highlighted portions to review the material to cement the information into my mind. If I did not understand the information, I would re-read the paragraph multiple times, which was time consuming. Additionally, I used to simultaneously highlight and read, producing an unnecessary amount of highlighting since not understanding the material made everything appear important.
