A hospital is a utilitarian formal organization for the author, where they will work to provide medical care to patients and earn a salary in return. They will join the hospital to pursue their career goals, such as gaining experience and advancing their skills. Normative formal organizations are driven by shared values, beliefs, and norms, and they aim to promote social causes rather than self-interest (Conerly et al., 2021). People join because they care about the same cause or idea and want to help others. For example, the Canadian Nurses Protective Association (CAN) is a normative organization that represents registered nurses (RNs), nurse practitioners (NPs), and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) across Canada (Home Canadian Nurses Association, n.d.). Nurses voluntarily join the organization to contribute to the development of nursing standards and policies that help maintain quality patient care. Membership in CAN helps nurses advance their professional growth, learning, and advocacy for nursing practice (Home Canadian Nurses Association, n.d.).
