In the 1990’s, there was a man who was so prosperous and influential that he offered to pay all of Colombia’s national debt, ten billion dollars (Picone 13). This man’s name is Pablo Escobar, and he is without a doubt one of the most powerful criminals to ever live. Pablo Escobar was the king of the largest drug operation ever, and he became the leader of the group by killing and committing ruthless murders. After a huge insurgence of cocaine supplied by Escobar, the American government decided it was time to imprison or kill him. However, Escobar was one step ahead of them and built himself a luxury prison, claiming he was detained (Bowden 3). After a few years with no change, the American government decided to go after Pablo Escobar again. This time, Escobar was assassinated on December 1, 1993, on a rooftop in Bogota, Colombia (Bowden 2). Not only was Escobar murdering, but he was corrupting Colombia’s legal system while pumping tons of cocaine into the U.S. each day. In addition, Escobar was a threat to Colombia because of his many robberies, bribes, and drugs. In fact, he had a policy for Colombians in power; it was named “silver or lead”, which meant either accept his bribe or die (“The Incredible Life of Pablo Escobar” 2). Escobar was also very dangerous in Colombia because of his influence in the government and ability to bribe or kill whoever he wanted. For example, during one presidential election Pablo Escobar murdered 3 out of 5 of the presidential candidates (Picone 6).
