An opportunity was seized by the Joint Staff planner for the Army’s desire to proceed through the Southwest Pacific as well as letting the Navy’s immediate action in the Central Pacific. Operation GALVANIC let MacArthur keep the 1st Marine division under him and to use the army division as an alternative unit in the Gilberts.
