In the concentration camps, the Jewish people undergo a lot of physical pain and their torturers seem remorseless. Gunmen do not hesitate to shoot bullets at them. When Eliezer and his group march in the cold, SS officers have "their fingers on the triggers, they [do] not deprive themselves of this pleasure. If one of [them] stop[s] for a second, a sharp shot finishe[s] off another filthy son of a bitch" (81). It is clear that Eliezer turns numb from the shootings because he uses the term 'filthy son of a bitch' as a mockery of the way the SS mocks them.
