What brings the character pain? In Hamlet, Act One Scene 2, the marriage of Claudius and Gertrude bring Hamlet pain because it is so soon after his father’s death. Hamlet thinks the marriage of his own uncle and mother is, “rank and gross” and is very disturbed by it. Not even two months ago that his father has been dead and his mother is already getting remarried. The mother remarried so quickly that “those shoes were old with which she followed my poor father’s body”. Instead of grieving about King Hamlet’s recent death, Claudius and Gertrude are celebrating their marriage. Hamlet is in pain because Claudius and Gertrude are getting married so soon after King Hamlet’s death.
What motivates the character the most? Hamlet is primarily motivated by revenge on Claudius to fulfill his father’s wishes. Hamlet’s depressed emotions quickly turn into anger towards Claudius after the ghost of King Hamlet visits so that he “may sweep to my revenge”. After the King demands Hamlet to take revenge on Claudius, Hamlet is determined to “set it right” in order to satisfy his father. The marriage of Claudius and Gertrude …show more content…
Upon learning of his father’s murder, Hamlet explains that he will “set it right” by murdering Claudius. Hamlet is so eager to believe the ghost because he knows that it is his father and wants to obey his wishes. “…may sweep to my revenge” says Hamlet to prove to the ghost that he strongly believes in murdering Claudius and will do it immediately. Hamlet already strongly dislikes Claudius because he married his mother so quickly after King Hamlet’s death, so the murder of his father gives him a solid reason to get revenge on Claudius.
