life was like during the Renaissance, specifically, what a women’s life was living in a
very structured life adding in aspects of betrothal, childbirth, and marriage.
During the Renaissance, women and men lived different lives compared to now.
The rules and circumstances have changed and everyone can live more freely. A text I’ve
read that puts art into context is Stanley Chojnacki’s essays, The Most Serious Duty.
Women coming together after a birth, shows the human connection and responsibility a
mother has. It also shows the obligation other mother’s feel when another baby is brought
into the world.

It’s incredible to see the details an artist takes into consideration when painting a
story. The thoughts of Chojnacki, set the stage and give an explanation as to why we see
paintings and portraits with the same depictions. In Bartolomeo di Fruosino’s desco de parto there is some music being played or
small dog. People who had wealth, most likely had musicians on call for when they have
guests over. I’ve also noticed the majority of people in a room with a new mother and
child are female. I think this is because the father could have been at work. The father
also could have simply been taking a break, leaving the women to complete his parental
duties. You can also note the women are dressed differently, leaving us to believe some
are house workers and others guests.
I think the purpose behind Renaissance art was to show society, how wealthy a
family was. The Renaissance is such a different time period, compared to now. We no
longer live in a culture where painted portraits are the first choice to show how much
money people have. In addition to entertaining people, I think art was so important
because it was all the media people had. It wasn’t like today with many media outlets
