In the piece “Elevate My Mind: Identities for Women in Hip Hop Love Songs”, the author Pamela Hollander makes an eye-opening critical analysis into the musical genre of hip hop and its representations of love and/or relationships. She also discusses, the categories that often define the women in the hip hop’s personas and how the genre is influenced by society and society is influenced by it. This piece appeals to its readers because of several characteristics that come together to form an accurate analysis of the hip hop culture and the ways it can be changed for the better. To begin, this piece is divided into different portions, each with a different explanation that come together to form a complete thought. Early on, Hollander provides background information to assist the portion of the audience that is unaware of subjects that are relevant to the topic at hand. In the last line, Hollander states, “Improvements in the representation of love in hip hop will have far reaching effects” (211). These far-reaching effects are most likely creating an environment where a healthy and supportive relationship, as well as the respectful treatment of women, is something to be valued in the genre of hip hop.
