Basketball was invented by James Naismith in 1891 (Basketball Facts). He was a teacher in a YMCA club in Springfield, Massachusetts (Basketball Facts). The game started out very small but over time it grew. For example, in the beginning the hoops were just baskets and wire. Now basketball hoops are made of medal rims and crisscrossed rope (Basketball Facts). The most points scored in a game by one player is 100 points (Top 10 Most Famous Basketball Players of All Time). In the article Basketball Facts, it said that Michael Jordan was a, “3-time SP Male Athlete of the Year; led the U.S. Olympic team to gold in 1984 and ’92.” Sadly, he retired when he turned 30 years old. He is a basketball legend and he has claimed many people’s admiration with his exceptional talents (Basketball Facts). Now basketball is a worldwide sport and even us here at Pan American Christian Academy play it every year. Professional basketball is always on T.V. and in the Unites States it is one of the most popular things to watch during your free time. There are women’s and girl’s teams as well as men’s and boy’s teams. It doesn’t discriminate anyone. There are even amazing basketball teams for people in wheelchairs (Wheelchair Basketball). These handicapped people have their own team that goes to the Olympics every year. Now, in order to understand the concepts of basketball, you have to know how to play. The point of the game is to get your team’s ball into a basket that is several feet high. There are two teams. Whoever gets the most points wins. As I said before, you cannot travel with the ball or foul someone when they are shooting. You also cannot hold someone’s wrist if they are dribbling or else it is a foul also. When you go up for a layup you cannot take more than two steps without dribbling. A layup is when you dribble down the side of the court and then you take two steps and shoot in the air right under the basketball hoop (Basketball Basics for New Players and Coaches). When the ball goes out and it is your team’s ball, you only have eight seconds to dribble to the other side of the court. And if you are dribbling in one spot and then you stop dribbling you cannot dribble again or else it would be called a double dribble. If that happens you must pass it to one your teammates (Basketball Basics for New Players and Coaches). Basketball is a game of speed and strategy. Each team has 5 players and there are five stations that they need to be in. At PACA we play basketball with a low post, a high post, and three guards but there are lots of ways to set up offense and defense. For example, sometimes we play a setup called man-on-man which is when each player guards one player from the other team the whole time.
