The chosen topic for this student research project is about comparing the absorbency of paper towels. The experiment will be about measuring the absorbency of at least 3 different brands of paper towels and see which one is the most absorbent out of the three. The purpose of this experiment is to see which brand would be best for a consumer who needs a good brand of paper towel and by doing this experiment can show us which brand would be best. Paper towels are used on a daily basis for some people in their households, mostly for the kitchen and the bathroom. Also, paper towel is useful for cleaning greasy, watery surfaces after cooking in the kitchen, which has much more strength and absorbency than using tissues or napkins. Paper towels are not only things we have in our household, some people use napkins or tissues to clean the kitchen or wash their hands, which isn’t as effective as paper towels. Paper towel, napkins and tissues are of course all made out of paper products and are therefore made from paper. But even though they are all made out of paper, kitchen paper towels are more absorbent then napkins or tissues in picking up large amounts of liquid this is because paper towels are manufactured and woven through 2 processes which are called creeping and embossing. Creping create open areas in the paper towel for the water to enter by using a blade to disrupt fibre to fibre bonds that forms a folded structure in the paper towel. Embossing is then surfacing the paper towel, which is changed from a flat surface to a shaped surface. The empty spaces in paper towel let it absorb large mounts of liquid. So, napkins and tissues are not made this way and that is why paper towels are more
