Jim had some bad parenting issues throughout the book. Which included hitting his daughter or making Huck feel bad for being mean, but he was able to make a change. One of his mistakes is that he beat his daughter for not listening, but it turned out that she was deaf and couldn’t understand him. Jim felt terrible about this. I think this theory is supported by the fact that Pap chased Huck around a room with a knife until he passed out, but Huck knew how to handle this. Which makes me wonder if this has happened before. We also know that Pap only wanted Huck because of the money he had, which brings us to another kind of father figure to Huck. Judge Thatcher was “sold” the money by Huck. Instead of using the money like he easily could have done, he was smart enough to know to give Huck a dollar everyday so Huck could give something to his father, so he could go out and drink. There was a few different kinds of father figures to Huck but only two were positive.
