The sculptures are housed in the British museum where they are heavily guarded, while still being shown to the public. No harm has ever been done to them while on British soil. Even during the bombing of England in WW2, the British government made sure that the sculptures were placed in a safe location deep underground. However, if the sculptures were to be sent back to Greece they would be put in danger. Greece’s economic system is currently in a disarray, causing riots and a general instability. It would not take much convincing for a citizen who is down on their luck to try and steal the pieces to sell. Also, the supposed museum where the pieces would go is not that secure.
