The parties are an important symbol in the novel The Great Gatsby. We can see the masters’ personalities from the parties they held. The parties reflect the people.
In the novel, Gatsby keeps giving enormous parties. Everyone attends Gatsby’s parties without knowing who Mr. Gatsby. However, Gatsby himself doesn’t really enjoy the luxurious parties because he doesn’t play or chat with the guests, the reason he holds those parties is he wants to attract Daisy’s attention, although Daisy doesn’t even care. It seems like he doesn’t know how to hold good parties because he keeps spending money on useless stuffs like 200-orange juice machine and the whole pitiful strange combination of orchestra. According to Nick, her apartment was small but the furniture was too big for it and only picture in the room was a hen. She was trying to act a rich person but she doesn’t know how, thus she just spent money on whatever she could spend money on without considering if they match or they are actually good. I know she wants to be virtuous but I can’t stop laughing at this point. Tom and Myrtle had a fight about Daisy so Tom punched Myrtle on the nose but then talk about random lunch with Nick. This shows how Tom disrespect Myrtle and I guess Myrtle doesn’t love Tom also, she only loves money! Myrtle was money-minded and pathetic because she didn’t know the way to “show off” her little money.
Nick’s party was the best in the whole book even though he didn’t spend too much money on it. Nick helped Gatsby to calm down when Gatsby was nervous and anxious, he also notice the embarrassing relationship between Gatsby and Daisy and he actually solved it. His party didn’t have too many fancy decorations to make his small place crowded. He could guarantee that all his guests are feeling good and solve their problems because there were only two and he loves them.
