Partisanship is a natural phenomenon in society; we seek out, long for, furthermore align ourselves with others who share our ideas. Through these people, we polish our conceptions and gain audacity from the understanding that we are not solitary in our viewpoint. Factions give span, profundity, and magnitude to our individual voice. James Madison, the author of the Federalist #10 emphasized the causes of factions, the perils factions can pose, and solutions to the complication. Madison defined faction as “a number of citizens, whether amounting to a majority or a minority of the whole, who are united and actuated by some common impulse of passion, or of interest, adversed to the rights of other citizens, or to the permanent and aggregate interests of the community” (FEDERALIST No. 10.). I feel believe this is the natural behavior of society, we gather into factions when we feel unequal, then it is faction against faction or against the government. James Madison was concerned with factions as he feared it could lead to the destruction of our democracy and threaten liberties. These were solutions that Madison offered regarding the faction quandary. The first solution could not work as we are protected by our first ten amendments, constitution and declaration of independence, which secure our rights to freedom and liberty. The second solution is salubrious, but it does not plenarily eliminate the quandary, however it does not obstruct our natural right either.
