Pat continuously displayed his loyalty and duty to his teammates, coaches, peers, and leadership by proudly wearing his organization's uniform, whether it was football or military. Pat’s belief in the programs he belonged, ultimately led to two high school championships, one national title game appearance with Arizona State University, and multiple military accolades. With Pat’s maternal upbringing, he not only had self-respect and integrity but respected those around him. Pat ensured he only surrounded himself by those of a similar personality, character, and morals. The Army defines Selfless Service as, “put the welfare of the nation, the Army, and your subordinates before your own (The Army Values, 2017).” During the off-season in April 2002, in his Chandler, Arizona home, Pat typed a document on his computer that spoke to his selfless service. Pat stated, “however, these last few years, and especially after recent events, I’ve come to appreciate just how shallow and insignificant my role is. I’m no longer satisfied with the path I’ve been following…it’s no longer important (Filkins, 2009).” Turning down a lucrative three-year, $3.4 million contract with the Arizona Cardinals, Pat Tillman placed the welfare of the nation first, enlisting into the U.S. Army in June 2002.
