Paul Bloom's People Don T Actually Want Equality

Normally when I encounter an online article with the word “equality” in the title, I brace myself for endless whining and unsupported facts. Although I approached this article, People Don’t Actually Want Equality by Paul Bloom, the same way, I ended up not finding what was expected. As opposed to unreliable figures and idiotic opinions, I found cited studies and intelligent thoughts. The article uses information from studies, polls, and even comedians to back their thoughts. The wide range of sources comes together beautifully in this article. Mr. Bloom opens by stating people don’t want equality, what they really want is fairness. He shares that across countless different polls, many Americans are bothered by economic inequality. The first thing I noticed is the polls didn’t mention what the inequality was, so the polls were just asking the blind citizens of America their opinion on an issue that may barely even exist. The author then continues to reference Harry Frankfurt, stating inequality isn’t what is bugging people. Paul Bloom takes this information and makes the claim it is the causes and the consequences that bother people. The first example was a study done by Alex Shaw and Kristina Olson. In the study, they told a story about two boys who cleaned their room and were being rewarded with erasers. The problem was there were five erasers and only two boys, making an even split impossible. The children insisted the boys each get two and the last eraser should be thrown away. The children still insisted the last eraser should be thrown away if the one boy would never find out the other got an extra. It wasn’t until the researcher said one boy did more work than the other boy that the children allowed the uneven split. This shows again they don’t want equality, they want
