Paul the main character in All Quiet on the Western Front goes through more than most people ever will, especially considering he is at the young age of 19. Paul clearly speaks for his generation; he has seen what others would consider to be there worst nightmare. Paul’s generation also gets lost during this war, which he and many others blame the older generation for. In the loss of his own generation, he is the one standing until the end who can voice everything all of his friends have seen. Paul also speaks very strongly about the effects of war; however, he shockingly says that the war affects the people who survive just as much as those who died. The ones who do continue and survive have to deal with the destruction of the war and rebuild
