All the responsibilities that Revere’s father had were now passed on to him. The family’s main source of income was his job and he took over his father’s silversmith shop. In 1756 he volunteered to fight the French at Lake George as a second lieutenant of colonial artillery. After he was done briefly serving, he married a women named Sarah Orne in August 1757. She had eight children with Paul Revere. Sadly his wife died in the Spring of 1773. Not long after she died he fell in love with a neighbor, Rachel Walker. Also with his second wife he also had eight children with her. During the time of economic depression Revere learned other ways to make money if his silversmith job did not make enough money. He became a dentist, by cleaning people’s teeth and putting in artificial teeth. The teeth were made using hippopotamus tusks. Other jobs he acquired was printing business cards, illustrations for books and magazines, political cartoons, bookplates, a songbook, menus for taverns, etc. Even though he had little side jobs, the silversmith shop was his professional career for over forty
