Born in Princeton, New Jersey, on April 9, 1898, Paul Robeson rose to prominence in the 20th century and made a lasting impact on international relations, the arts, and civil rights. His varied upbringing, professional accomplishments, and importance to the Harlem Renaissance all point to a complicated and significant individual.

Robeson comes from an illustrious family with a strong history of activism and academics. His mother, Maria Louisa Bustill, was a teacher from a well-known Quaker family, and his father, William Drew Robeson, was a freed slave who became a Presbyterian minister. Robeson's constant devotion to social justice and education was made possible by this legacy.
