Paula Scher is a graphic designer. She started her career working with two of the world’s record labels and at her peak produced 150 album covers a year-including classics such as Boston’s eponymous 1976 debut album. She was the first female principal at illustrious design agency pentagram. Her style is to use bold imagery and uses typography in an almost illustrative rather than print style. She also works as an educator, writer, and fine artist. She also received many of the top awards in the design world including the American Institute of Graphic Arts medal, which she received in 2001. Paula was born in 1948 in Washington DC. She studied at the Tyler school of art in Philadelphia. At that school she received her Bachelor’s degree in fine arts in 1970. For five years, Scher worked independently that was between 1979 and 1984. During that time, she worked a lot on alternate typographic vocabularies within her work. After that she joined her former classmate Terry Koppel in founding Koppel + Scher. Her style of design communicates with contemporary audiences through the use of pop iconography, music and film. Her work as a partner of Pentagram continues to inspire the new generation of designers. According to Paula her herself, she stated that she couldn’t draw when she started college, but that was okay because she learned how to express herself and to illustrate using type on the computer.
