In the novel News of the World, Paulette Jile’s suggests that you cant understands someone’s life and their struggles unless you truly get to know them. The time period in which this novel takes place in is very segregated based on race. Johanna, a white girl who was kidnapped at the age of four by the Kiowa feels the isolation of society more than most. She is seen as an alien by most people to white to be Native American but to native American to be white. However, there is one character by the name of Captain Kidd who will become very close to Johanna and understand exactly who she is.

One day after finishing a reading, the Captain is confronted by a man named Almay. He has one thing on his mind and that one thing is Johanna. Almay asks the captain how much money it would take for him to hand over Johanna. The Captain who is a clever man knows exactly why Almay wants Johanna. He wants her for himself as well as selling her to other men. Instead of giving in and making decent money, the Captain tells Almay he’ll think about it. However there was nothing to think about because Captain would never give up Johanna even for money. Johanna and Captain decided to run from Almay and his men. Captain took Johanna and ran taking a route he thought would lose their pursuers. Unfortunately they didn’t lose them but ended up being ambushed by Almay and his men. Not willing to give up Johanna, Captain found himself in a gun fight with Almay’s men. It was at this point we learned something huge about the Captain. He has become so close to Johanna that “In some ways he wouldn’t mind going out in a blaze of glory. Seventy-one was a good long time to have lived. But then there was Johanna”(106). in this moment the Captain is willing to lose his life to protect Johanna. But he also realizes that if he dies now, Johanna will be taken and abused for the rest of her life. At this point the Captain is living for Johanna and nothing else. He wont rest until he knows Johanna will be safe. Through the journey and the time he has spent with Johanna he has come to love and accept who she is. He embraces her native side and does not force things on her. He and Johanna have created an unbreakable
