Introduction
Ethnic minorities, such as the Latino population, are known to have unequal access to treatment in comparison to the dominant population in the United States. Some of these individuals experience additional challenges, such as cultural, language, immigration status, and financial stressors. Culturally, seeking mental health services is stigmatized, especially in males. In addition, some diagnosis, may not be culturally appropriate or accurate for these individuals. For example, the National Institute of Mental Health (2018) mentions that Latinos often express nervious, which is nervousness, as a symptom to their provider, but it is a cultural expression that could include depression symptoms. This study compared depression diagnosis among various Latinx identities, African Americans, and Caucasian individuals. Within the Latinx group, Puerto Rican men had higher rates of major depression compared to all other members in the study. This was specifically salient among those whose income is less than 5,000 dollars a year. Considering unique cultural expressions, such as Latino men having additional responsibilities through their gender roles, I strongly believe that it is important to work together to promote healthy coping skills with this community that are culturally sensitive. Examples of these coping skills include: promoting more family interaction and spirituality. I believe that when working with this population, it is important to consider other strong values, such as strict gender roles, family, and religion in to the treatment plan. As a female, I need to consider showing respect and authority for Latino men’s autonomy in goal making as machismo has shown that they oversee their own goal. I am more biased to advocate for this community in having more culturally competent individuals in mental health settings that could help decrease the stigmatization in the community to receive support. Practicing evidence-based practices (EBP) are the most useful skills that I can apply as a social worker. I must be competent in treatment and diagnosing when working with this community as the interaction they have with me may determine if they pursue or continue treatment. As a social worker, it is important to integrate the client’s culture and values with EBPs to provide the best treatment in care, especially with the increase risk of
