The pediatric iHOPE research day was very enlightening. What really stood out to me was that pediatric care takes a large multi disciplinary team in order to provide the best care possible. As seen in this pediatrics conference, the research was composed of immunology, hematology, oncology, palliative care and environmental health. The research that is being done in each of these specialties was exciting to hear about. It really made me think about all the different aspects that play into pediatrics as well as health care itself. Each presenter in the conference was very different. The research that they each presented on all had very different significance and will affect children in a multitude of different ways. For example the presentation by Charlene Nielson talked about the relationship between hazardous air pollutants with adverse birth outcomes, whereas the presentation by the registered nurse, Heather Bauman, talked about the impact that a nursing home support program could have on children with severe haemophilia. Children are still growing and developing and need different treatments than adults. Therefore it was interesting to hear about all of the different research that is being done that could potentially have a direct impact on children. Before the research day, it was very easy for me to theoretically think only of the aspects of treating the patient in the present situation and forget about all of the different parts of research that need to occur in order to be able to treat the patient in the best possible way. This research day was able to expand my view on the hard work that occurs before any advances reach the clinics. It was interesting to see and hear about the new advances that are coming into the medical
