Peloponnesian War Athens Vs Sparta

Athens and Sparta came into conflict because Athens was using war money to beautify and glorify their own city. This did not sit well with the Spartans, who had trusted the Athenians with their money. So, they engaged in the Peloponnesian War, (431-404 BCE). While Athens had a better navy, Sparta had the better army. Another factor that could explain Athens defeat, would be Pericles allowing all the citizens of Athens into the city walls, for protection. While they were all grouped up together, the plague hit and killed 1/3 of the citizens, as well as Pericles himself. Sparta was aided by Persia in this war, too. This was probably because Persia saw this as an opportunity to seek revenge on Athens for their determination in the Persian Wars.
