What We Deserve “We accept the love we think we deserve.” This infamous quote from the novel, Perks of Being a Wallflower, provides a general yet complex observation of how people see themselves. People tend to accept how they are treated or how they see themselves because that is what they feel is justified. Every human being has felt insecure or unconfident at one point in their lives. However, why has it become acceptable for people, more specifically, teenagers, to degrade themselves? Low self-esteem is defined as a mental disorder where an individual sees himself/herself as “inadequate, unlovable, and/or incompetent”(DoSomething.org). To clarify, self-esteem is not based off of how surrounding people see an individual, but rather how the individual feels about themselves. According to DoSomething, 7 in 10 girls feel like they do not measure up to standards in ways including looks, performance and relationships with surrounding people. We are currently living in a society where standards currently define us. How a girl or boy is expected to look and act has a major effect on how each person feels about themselves. People absorb their flaws because they feel like those qualities define who they are. It is easier for most people to point out mistakes and flaws than appreciate all the parts of themselves that are wonderful. The major problem with this is that people are letting their flaws define them. They are letting mistakes and insecurities control their lives. Despite what is commonly perceived, the power to control these things and change how a person feels about themselves are in their own
