When she’s walking through what used to be her neighborhood, she passes a house that not like the others. She stops and views a little boy and thinks to herself, “The boy gives each child a worm, then hands one to the woman. Once everyone else has had one, he takes one for himself, eating the wriggling creature in little bites, savoring it” (96). The little boy and his family are so scarce on food that they must savor each bite of a worm to stay alive. This shows the hardship of the men, women, and children that are still left on the earth.
