Personal Narrative: A Career As A Registered Nurse

It may be hard for some to pick the job of their dreams, or for others they know immediately what they want to set out to do for the rest of their lives. For me, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, until I had to go to the hospital. While I was sitting there in the hospital bed, all that I could do was look around at the hard working men and women putting I.V.’s in someone’s arm and making sure all the patients were comfortable. It was then that I realized what Registered Nurses do exactly, and noticing that even though they were working a twelve plus hour shift, I knew that is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, which was to be an RN (registered nurse). When I say job situations I mean being a CNA may sound so much fun, but when it comes to the tasks you have to do for the job, parts of it is fun while others are not so much. When you work as a CNA the only fun part about it is being with the residents and talking to them and hearing their stories, even if you heard the same story ten times in the last thirty minutes. I think no matter how many times I hear their stories it is just so rewarding that I get to know them and hear all about them, and sometimes you just being their lights up their whole day and you can’t take anything away from that. The downfall to being a CNA is having to clean up after them, and that task can range from changing their bed sheets, giving them a bath/shower, changing them, feed them, or even wipe their butts. I knew from the second that I wanted to be an RN I would have to push through tedious tasks, because without CNA’s who would care for someone’s grandma, grandpa, mom, or dad. I respect the people that want to be a CNA for the rest of their lives, but for me I want to go
