A professional counselor must take time to continue to develop as a professional counselor while collaborating with other professionals. The school counselor, “develops a plan to deal with personal (emotional and cognitive) and institutional resistance impeding the change process (ASCA National Model: A Framework for School Counseling Programs, 2012).”
The role of leadership can be stressful and one must take time to assess and exam their own physical and psychological well-being while working to promote academic and social growth for students in a staff environment. The school counselor is a very important component to the education system. Their responsibilities and duties are multi, not only are they responsible for student academic successes, they are also responsible for student personal development growth as well as socialization skills. One also advocates for all students to receive an equal education in a safe environment while adhering to school policies set by the school system as well as the federal government. It is extremely important for counselors to keep documentations and records. As a beginning school counselor I will have limited experience of managing time and while keeping my own records so it will be to my best interest to develop a routine of documenting right away. As a beginning school counselor it will be important to work with my colleagues and professional organizations in order to build my skills and develop working relationships and I will learn how to control my need of solving problems and allow students the chance to develop problem solving skills.
