Personal Narrative: Ala Moana Courts

Back in the beginning of the 8th grade, after surfing for months, I started to enjoy it. I learned how to catch waves and turn. This was just what my dad was waiting for. He said that the next time that we go surfing, he would take me to a new surf spot called Ala Moana Courts. “It is called courts because the surf spot is out in front of the tennis courts.” my dad told me. “It’s a little bigger than what you’re used to, but you’ll have fun.” So, when we decided to go surfing, I packed my swim clothes, my board, and my leash and we drove to Ala Moana.

When we got to Ala Moana and found parking, I got my board out jumped into the water, put on my leash and started to paddle out. It was a very long paddle, after I paddled past the lagoon and to the reef, I felt dead, but I wasn’t even halfway there and I couldn’t see how big the waves were. After about 10 minutes of paddling, I got to the surf spot. I watched in awe as the waves rolled by. These waves were massive, at least 3 feet tall (from the back and 6 feet from the front). It wasn’t too big, so no one went after it, but it wasn’t too small. I turned my board and start paddling. As I paddle, I look behind and see a massive wave forming. I continue paddling and suddenly, I feel the wave hit me, I felt the wave’s massive energy. My board goes flying forward; my instincts take over and I stand up. I go forward for a while since the wave was still forming, and when it starts breaking (whitewash forms), my board shoots down the face of the wave. With the energy of the board, I turn my board to the left and I ride the wave to the left, turn and then ride the wave to the right. As the wave dies down, I get off the wave and start to paddle out. That wave was the best wave I have surfed at the
