As a fourteen year old fresh out of middle school, my view of the world was a small bubble. I thought I knew just how the world worked and where I fit into it. Looking back, I was in for quite a shock. Freshman year began, and as my schedule filled up, I became engulfed in new activities, new friends, and endless great experiences. My perspective on life was slowly broadened as I encountered teachers who challenged me as a student, and more importantly as a person. I got involved in volunteer work early on, working with refugee children in the city. For the first time, I was introduced to people whose lives were so drastically different than mine. I discovered the great benefits that come from taking care of one’s body, and I was able to push myself physically to new limits. Through cross country and track, I was able to experience the joy of being on a team, and the strength that comes from a supportive and loving group of people working towards the same goal. Without sports, I don’t know who my friends would be or what kind of person I would be today. As a freshman, I was shy and not confident in my abilities. Being a captain of a team has shown me the difficulty of leadership, as well as the reward and satisfaction.
