High school is a life changing experience for all students. Countless books and films have been created to document the journey young people take as they transition from childhood to adulthood. It is often coined “the best four years of our lives.” Although I have no idea what the rest of my life holds, I can say that the last four years of my life have changed who I am as a person.
As a fourteen year old fresh out of middle school, my view of the world was a small bubble. I thought I knew just how the world worked and where I fit into it. Looking back, I was in for quite a shock. Freshman year began, and as my schedule filled up, I became engulfed in new activities, new friends, and endless great experiences. My perspective on life was slowly broadened as I encountered teachers who challenged me as a student, and more importantly as a person. I got involved in volunteer work early on, working with refugee children in the city. For the first time, I was introduced to people whose lives were so drastically different than mine. I discovered the great benefits that come from taking care of one’s body, and I was able to push myself physically to new limits. Through cross country and track, I was able to experience the joy of being on a team, and the strength that comes from a supportive and loving group of people working towards the same goal. Without sports, I don’t know who my friends would be or what kind of person I would be today. As a freshman, I was shy and not confident in my abilities. Being a captain of a team has shown me the difficulty of leadership, as well as the reward and satisfaction.
