Personal Narrative: Bear Buddies

Throughout my time in high school and college, I have been a part of several different organizations. Most of which being volunteer-based, which has allowed me to interact with my different communities in ways I didn’t think possible. I’ve volunteered at annual Fall Festivals, 100ks and sprint triathlons, Alternative Giving Markets, blood drives, Renaissance fairs, and Buddy Club dances. But the organization that impacted me the most was one I was involved with senior year called Bear Buddies. At the beginning of the year, I was assigned a local elementary school student who needed more attention than her peers. I learned how to communicate with people of all different ages, how to comfort children in situations I haven’t been in, and how to make the best out of challenging situations. In all honesty, I didn’t recognize how much my bear buddy was impacting me until it was time to leave her. We both were looking forward to the school year being over, but we weren’t looking forward to saying goodbye. Saying goodbye to my bear buddy was one of the most difficult things I have ever had to do, but it also taught me how to keep in touch with people even though I’m long distance, which is important with Study Abroad and with life in general. Like said earlier, although Bear Buddies impacted me the most, I’ve also been in different organizations in high school and college that have impacted me in different ways. In high school I was a co-founder of my school’s cooking club, Domestichemistry, and I was Social Media Chair of my college resident hall’s hall council. These organizations both allowed me to hold leadership positions that taught me how to take charge, communicate with others, and problem-solve when things don’t go as
