Personal Narrative: Changing The Place I Am

I have never stayed in one place for long, always on the move, changing the place I call home and I am better person for it. I have learned to appreciate multiple cultures, landscapes, diversity, importance of family, and what it means to be courageous. I consider myself a child of the World starting life in South Africa, traveling up the Atlantic to England, then across to Ohio, and now I have the amazing opportunity to move another time to beautiful Italy. Even though I grew up shoulder to shoulder with various cultures, it was not until my most recent move to Milan that I had a serious dose of culture shock. Going to an international school has thrown me into a mixing pot of people, languages, religions, ideas, and values that I cannot hide from. I spoke a decent amount of Spanish, had seen various cities across the globe, and had a toleration and acceptance for people different than myself. My high opinion of myself quickly shifted after I moved here. I realized that I am no longer the only student who has lived the crazy global life, the only student who had extensive travel experience, but instead I was average. Being bi or tri- lingual is almost a standard among my peers, they have seen as much or more than I have of this world, lived and learned alongside other international students their whole life. My roommates are from Bavaria, Prague, Quebec, and Paris, they all speak at least two languages, have studied in different countries throughout their academic life. I will admit that it is sometimes difficult to constantly be surrounded by people who do live and learn differently than I do but I would never trade this opportunity. This experience continues to be eye opening, enthralling, and always keeping me on my toes and I am so thankful for
