You’re going to be late for the tea.” I groaned and sat up. “Sarah, your hair is atrocious,” maid Althema said as she poured water into the basin. Her plump body moved swiftly in her faded dress. I began stripping down into my undergarments as she left with a huff. I slid myself into the cold water and sat, thinking for a minute. Geneva, despite being small as a mouse, had specially prepared geese and roasted grouse, with squash and creamed corn. Althema started bringing out the water glasses when there was a knock on the door. “I will get it,” I called out. I walked to the door and opened it for Reverend Paul and the mayor and smiled warmly.
