Last summer, I led a group of fellow Boy Scouts on a 10-day backpacking trip in northeastern New Mexico. Before the trip, I was elected Crew Leader charged with organizing the crew, assigning duties, and ensuring that everyone was safe. The trip got off to a terrific start, I led my crew through miles of mountainous terrain, utilizing a map and compass for navigation. On our fifth and most arduous day, we got up early and began our hike. During a quick break, one of my fellow Scouts asked to take a look at the map. I was hesitant because I did not want to relinquish control over what I thought was the correct course. He concluded that we had been hiking in the wrong direction for almost 3 miles.
