Personal Narrative: Getting Hired

Only 34% of teens have a job (Tanaz), but when I heard that I could work for a real employer at 14 I was Intrigued. I was confused, I thought I would never be hired or paid above minimum wage. I asked myself some important questions. ‘Where can I even work?’ ‘What hours can I work?’ And ‘What do I have to do to get hired?’.

I already knew that I might need to have age certification, hours were limited and so were available jobs, I wanted to look more in depth to these topics. Other than the facts previously stated, I was oblivious to the job scene. I wanted to get hired at 14 because I would gain experience, earn money and have something to do. I thought a job could really help me meet new people that don’t go to MME

I organized what I needed to know. I knew I had to figure out where to apply. I wanted to know how to get hired, how to get hired and where to even apply to. I needed to research this because I want to have my first choice of employer. I also didn’t want to constantly be turned down or not called back. I researched so I can get hired at a good job at 14 by having a strong resume, understanding legalities, and apply at appropriate close jobs that accept employees at 14.

I found out, in the state of Minnesota, teens under 18 needed working papers and official age documents. Working papers are legal documents that certify that i may work. I also read that I could get them sent to me from the state. I researched hours and came up with the fact I can only work from 7am-7pm during the school year. Researching more, I saw that I could not work at jobs the FLSA considers hazardous. Examples of hazardous jobs are a construction worker or heavy machine operator. I also needed a resume, which I will get into
