I came to America in summer 2014. I was overwhelmed but excited to have the freedom to follow my dreams. I found out about the dental assistant position and was excited to be able to get into the field with little schooling. The language barrier and shock of new culture made class very difficult. I finished and worked as a dental assistant for 6 months. This assured me even more that I wanted to be a dentist. This was my new path. While in college, pursuing dentistry, the language barrier was even more difficult. I would have to record lectures and look up many words at first but each semester my language skills improved. Now I currently work as a tutor helping other students with science. This has greatly improved my communication skills. I joined the pre-dental society at LSU and learned about LA MOM. I volunteered as a dental assistant, worked with dentists, and met a lot of pre-dental students. This was motivating and rewarding helping people in need. I could see myself or my mom as one of the patients who needed dental work. I have always loved helping not only people but animals too. Since I have been in America I have fostered animals for SPCA and have two recuse dogs of my own. This wouldn’t be possible in Iran. I always loved animals since I was a kid and can’t imagine my life without
