The year was 1984, I was 8 years old living in a town located in the peninsula just 20 miles south of beautiful San Francisco California, when my father decided that he no longer desired the American dream and instead decided to move back to Mexico. I was born in Palo Alto California from Mexican immigrants. Both my parents migrated from Mexico to the United States in the 60’s seeking the American dream; employment and the opportunity to provide a brighter future to their children. My parents eventually settle in Redwood City, or like many Hispanics call it “Little Mexico”. I had 4 siblings, I had three older brothers and a younger sister. We all managed to live in a small apartment complex near the railroad tracks. We were never rich, both my parents had labor jobs; My father had a landscaping route and my mother would clean homes in the cities of Atherton and Woodside Ca. I remember having many friends at school and in my neighborhood. On occasions my mother would take me to McDonalds or Chucky Cheese. I was 8 years old and didn’t know anything else but to be a kid and enjoy life as I knew it. I enjoyed all the holidays we celebrate in the USA with Halloween being my favorite. I could not wait for it to get dark so I could start trick or treating with my friends. At the end of the night I would come home and my mom would sort my candy and put it away because she knew I would probably eat it all in one
