During the first two years of my life, my mother was deployed for the Navy. When I was merely 12 months old, Johanna Zaugg came into my life. She was my mother’s best friend from Switzerland. That’s where I found Miriam, and grew into my strongest self. My arrival was a few weeks after Johanna returned home. From the moment I got off the plane in Zurich, I abandoned my American culture. “Wilkomme!” was plastered all over Johanna’s house. Johanna’s sisters and nieces warmly greeted me. They swiftly ushered me into the Swiss culture by showing me what it's like to live in their homeland. The Zaugg family taught me around 200 basic Swiss-German words and phrases, such as “Fröit mi”, meaning “Pleased to meet you”. By learning to communicate, I gained independence and broke free from my protective cocoon. A moment, which proved significant, was attending a Swiss school for a week. I biked a mile and a half to get to the school in absence of a local bus. When I arrived for my first day of school, I felt comfortable. The students were thrilled to meet me.
