Personal Narrative: Moving

Moving. The definition of the word moving is to be in motion or to be moved emotionally. But can this contain both definitions at the same time? It did when with my parents, three sisters, and I buckled into our car and hauled all of our belongings 632 miles down to Raleigh, North Carolina. I wondered how I would ever be happy again after leaving my friends and family behind. It took me awhile, being a shy kid and all, but I did find more friends and what I was not necessarily looking for: myself. But by successfully starting my own global service club, I went into a period of personal growth and evolved into the young adult I am today. Being such a shy kid, I had no idea how I would ever work up the courage to even approach a teacher about the idea of being our advisor. Lying awake at night, I would think about how I could not let my insecurity get in the way of such a revolutionizing club. I eventually gained the confidence and, pronouncing her name wrong, I asked Ms. Hatcher to be our advisor. After she said yes, the rest of my Sophomore year we teamed up with Challenging Heights to raise awareness for those affected by human trafficking. Our first fundraiser, we asked teachers to volunteer to be pied in the face and then went around during lunches and asked students to donate for which teacher they would prefer to get pied in the face during our winter pep rally. We expected students to just want to hear about a teacher getting pied in the face but many showed interest into the cause and it was always enlightening bringing to light a community of people that are so easily forgotten overseas.
