In order to save our lives, my family and I immigrated to Syria in 2006, because of the war. Approaching the Syrian borders, the refugees looked like a colony of ants from the bus I was in. I already knew that we were not going to get passed the border so easily. Since the war had started in Iraq, all airlines were cancelled and the only way to leave was by car. On our way from Iraq to Syria was a horrible experience. Every time there was an explosion on the road, the driver would turn up the radio so the passengers would stay calm. After a tense road trip, we finally approached the Syrian borders. The colony of ants I mentioned before were the hundreds of Iraqis refugees waiting in line to escape the daily horrors they face in Iraq. Finally, after almost 10 hours of struggling and tiring my family and I let in. It was such big and perfect news to hear. It was a day I no longer speak Arabic all the time, but learn a new language. I was moving from Syria to Chicago. My family and I faced a different challenges, for instance how the language different, and the culture is also different. It was a big decision to make as a family, but we knew it was a good choice to make and better than stay in Syria. Moving to a new country is like starting a new life, new language, new culture, and new everything. It’s hard and very complicated at first; however, taking it step by step is really helpful.
