My strengths in the clinical setting are; active listening skills when interviewing patients, ability to communicate with the patient in layman’s terms to optimize patient understanding, physical exam, obtaining a patient history and ordering the correct labs or imaging studies. My weaknesses are gaining speed in completing a well-documented EMR, confidence in knowing the correct medication to prescribe and evaluation of laboratory data. I am a patient advocate and enjoy patient education. However, my preceptor reminds me to emphasize two or three major points in education in order to not overwhelm the patient. Printed education material is also provided in the appropriate language. I am missing experiences in suturing but I should gain that during his clinical rotation with Dr. Sanders, who is a foot and ankle surgeon. I love providing care in the practice of orthopedics, both surgically and clinically. I have interviewed with a foot and ankle surgeon, Dr. Melanie Sanders in Mooresville, IN. I have known her for almost 30 years, as I used to be a surgical assistant for her husband, Dr. Keating. She is an excellent physician who has a very conservative approach to management of her patients. She is an excellent diagnostician and technician who is very kind to her patients and to me.
