Personal Narrative: My Cross-Country Team

I wish I had loved playing softball with my team. I wish my basketball coach had made the team feel more comfortable with one another. That didn’t happen though. Until now, I wondered why I never felt as if I was part of a team. Why did practicing as a team always feel like a competition? Thanks to my cross-country team and coach, I now understand what a team is. I expected it to be different than other sports because it was individual, I never imagined how different cross-country could be. First of all, my teammates cheered me on. As opposed to other sports where they might want someone to disappoint the coaches in order for them to play. In fact, the other teams cheered me on also. They were happy for me and how well I was doing and didn’t care that I was their competition. In the crowd at the end of the race, I was expecting encouragement from my team but, everyone cheers you on. They didn’t care what team I was running for. After the race, my entire team celebrated together. The bus ride back was filled with the cacophonic noises of an excited team. JV and Varsity teammates are equals because they both run the same race. Everyone went through the same amount of pain, the only difference was the speed at which they ran. We should cheer each other on, even the people we compete against. Everybody is equal because we all start the same way. We all begin at the start line. I believe in life we should always be kind because we don’t know who will need us to lean on in the future. Just like on a cross-country team, some of us might go slower, but we all end up in the same spot. Everyone is part of my team, they might need me to cheer them on every once in awhile and I would hope they’d do the same for me. Some of us might start with injuries, or run in a slightly different race, though, we all finish the race. It doesn’t matter how long it takes us to get
