In middle school, there were various 4-H projects and contests in which a member could compete. After debating on many, I chose to participate in public speaking. I had been preparing for days and was extremely skittish.The interview was in Auburn, and my dad was driving me down there. The whole way he said things like, “You are going to do great!” and “It’s just one interview.” I was waiting in a room outside of the interviewing room, and they finally called my name to come in. First, they told me to take a deep breath and then started asking questions such as, “What qualities would you bring to the 4-H officer team?” and “If there were to be a fifth H, what would you make it?” I was completely speechless. I had not ever been asked questions that I had to elaborate on and was not as prepared as I had thought. I started rambling on, just to make the time go by faster. When I came out, I felt as if my stomach had dropped to the ground. I received an email later on that said I had not been selected to be on the state officer team. I felt heartbroken and as if I wanted to give up 4-H forever. However, I talked to one of the judges about my interview, and she turned my way of thinking upside down. Instead of being so devastated and agitated, I realized I needed to make this a learning experience and come back next year with the qualities that would make me a stronger
