I was about 14 years old, at this time and what I’m about to tell you is the scariest, but fascinating experience I had while I was up in Lake of the Woods. My grandparents and I were just packing up to go and get on the road to Lake of the Woods. I could feel the nice warm, not so humid, air that wisped around my body. I knew at that moment it was going to be a good day/ I thought anyway. Finally, we were on the road, at about 4 a.m. to get up to upper Minnesota around 8 a.m. I fell asleep right away, until we stopped at Drayton to go to the bathroom, and get some grub. Not to long after getting on the interstate, we suddenly swerved and the boat, and us were skidding sideways down the interstate. Luckily, …show more content…
The lake was fairly calm, so we headed out to this island right in the middle of the lake, where my grandparents fished last time they were here last summer. We started to put our lines in the water and start trolling. We were using bottom-bouncers and spinners. My grandma and grandpa, gave me this new rod and reel also. This new kind of fishing rod, was very new to me. I’m used to the spinning rod and reel, but this was a bait-casting rod and reel, made for trolling. I use it now when I’m 17 as a casting rod combo. We were out on the lake for about 2 hours just trolling up and down this island. We didn’t catch a lot of walleyes the first half day, but we had 2 more days to fish. We started to head back now, when we were coming up to the blue silos, and I looked and said “WOW” in my head. One of the bright blue silos fell in the water. Thankfully though, it was along the edge so we could get around it. Just think, what if we were fishing there and the blue silo didn’t fall toward the bank. What if we were there and it fell right on top of us. Just, glad no one was …show more content…
We got up at the same time the next day. Ate breakfast, and started to head out again. This time the day was gloomy, very low temp but very humid in the morning. We headed out to the lake, there was a light wind, that created some 3 foot rollers, and whitecaps. Nothing a 21.5-foot boat couldn’t handle. We got to the spot, the wind really picked up now. I was kind of scared, but I was fishing so I was happy. My grandpa said “Here take this!” I took it and he said “Cast it out there, bet you will catch a fish.” I casted it out there and reeled it in. 30 seconds later, I had something big on the line. Not like a walleye or a sturgeon, but a 5lbs smallmouth bass. That sucker was huge. My grandpa said “Told you!” I took pictures with that one also, before we let it go. We went back into a little bay area, and hopefully to get some wind
