Personal Narrative: My Experience Before Joining The Marine Corps

Before finishing High School, I did not know what I wanted to do next with my life. I knew I did not want be stock in a general labor kind of job for the rest of my life, like my Dad did. One day, I was working at Burger King and two Marine Corps recruiters came to the Drive-Thru and ordered two whoppers. When they got to the window I charged them and one of them asked me “how old are you?” I said “18” then he said “what are you planning on doing after High school?” I answered “I don’t know yet”. Then, they came inside the restaurant and asked my boss if I could seat down and talk to them for a second. After talking to the recruiters at work, I knew that I wanted to be a part of the organization. I met them at the recruiting office, that same day, to talk more in depth about the standards and requirements. Some of the benefits of joining were education, traveling, and self-confidence just to name a few. Although, it sounded great, what motivated me to join was the prideful feeling of being part of such respected and unique organization. With rich history that showed the world extraordinary bravery and the Marine Corps was the toughest branch out of all. Also, I wanted to be part of a smaller size supportive family of individuals from all over the United Sates that form only 1% of the country population. I had always wanted to go to school and continue furthering my education. I wasn’t sure on what specifically, but was sure that I wanted to stick with what I had already learned in the military which is trucking, so I could use all these attributes in my advantage. For example, I was assigned to lead others marines as part of my job when I got promoted to a non-commissioned Officer. I was responsible for their wellbeing and making sure they knew how to do their job correctly and efficiently. I also learned to communicate with others and understood how important it was for a group to be as efficient as one. Being a professional in the work place and not letting my emotions and opinions influence my decisions was one of the greatest qualities to obtain.
