Personal Narrative: My First Week At Cayuga Medical Center

My first week at Cayuga Medical Center has been very interesting and informative. I have learned a great deal in such a short period of time. My personal task this week was to complete an activities calendar for Swing Bed patients for the months of July and August. To assist with the calendars, I used ideas from my Longterm Creativity Course, and my experience as a recreation assistant at Longview to create various activities that would interest not only older adults but all patients in this program. The activities on the calendar include board games, poetry sessions, storytelling, making a flag for the Fourth of July, meditation sessions, current news talk, and more. While making the calendars I tried to make sure every patient would enjoy the activities, and also benefit in some way from participating. I learned how much effortgoes into effectively treating patients and discharging them in a timely fashion while making sure that they are considerably healthy enough to leave the hospital. Along with their health status it is also important for them to address the needs and resources that the patient requires once they’re discharged from the facility. On Tuesday, June 23rd a webinar was held discussing the topic of two midnight stays in the hospital and the importance of differentiating whether a patient should be considered outpatient, inpatient, or observation status. After sitting in on rounds, a local agency called RedMoon, who received a grant to provide Nurse Case Management services in adult living facilities presented on the purpose and importance of their services. It was interesting to see what the nurses’ responsibilities were at those facilities and how it benefits the patient in the hospital and residents’ in different
