Personal Narrative: My Freshman Basketball Team

“Winning takes precedence over all. There’s no gray area. No almosts.” Kobe Bryant. I was finally a highschooler and achieved my personal goal, making the freshman basketball team. The season started in November and we were beginning to compete in games. I was very excited and ready for every practice and game. We finished the regular season 12-5 and we were all ready for the upcoming Presidents Day weekend tournament. Our first tournament game was at 10:00 o’clock at Ridge Middle School against Harvey. I got there at 9:15 ready and very thrilled to play my first tournament game as a Mentor Basketball player. We warmed up for 30 minutes and had our usually pregame speech. The game started and we won the tip-off. We were battling back and forth and were up 20-15 ending the first. Coming into the second quarter we got into early foul trouble. We missed easy shots and forced turnovers to bring Lake Catholic closer into the game. At half the score was 33-28 and some of us were starting to let our heads control the game in a negative way. The 3rd quarter ended at a tie of 40 a piece. I remember thinking to myself “I have to start playing harder and focus”. With less than 2 minutes to play, we were down 2 and I hit a 3 to give us the lead. I remember jumping up screaming “let’s go!” After that coach told me to guard their leading scorer and to not let him score. I made it my mission not to let him score or get the ball. He didn’t score and I caused him to make two turnovers. I was so proud of myself.Then after that, we started to get on a role. Making every shot, getting foul calls, and playing as a team. We defeated Lake Catholic
