3. Describe a time you were involved in a team effort - what role did you play, what were your successes, what were your challenges?

Throughout my schooling, I have been involved in many team activities such as basketball, track, softball, and band. However, band and my involvement in organizations within band have most greatly affected my life and learning. In a band, each individual is responsible for himself. At the same time, he relies on the other members around him to reach their personal goals in order to excel the band to a higher level. In my experience, I have played many different roles. I started out as an instrumentalist, where I learned to fit in with the people around me. I had to teach myself how to make my sound and my movements mesh into the group. In color guard, the object is for a group of individuals to gracefully spin a flag and dance, while all looking uniform and alike. I struggled at first because I did not fall into the “graceful” category. Eventually, I trained myself to move more agilely and smoothly. Due to my obsession with excelling in everything I do, I quickly became one of the better spinners. That year, I received an award naming me “the most improved visual member.” For the past two years, I have earned the title of color guard captain. This position have proved to be greatly rewarding and challenging at the same time. Some of my greatest joys come from watching my team members become better, more confident individuals. However, some of my biggest challenges have consisted of being a proper leader, dealing with individuals’ issues, and keeping the group connected. I have found that having an honest relationship with each individual keeps drama and issues to a minimum and trust and loyalty to a
