Randy also had a great knowledge of Mars and added, “That’s definitely an important factor but I think that Mars’ atmosphere will be more important as we must navigate through it to land and use it to our advantage to protect us. It is made up of mostly carbon dioxide with a little nitrogen, argon, oxygen, and carbon monoxide. The atmosphere is also 100 times thinner than Earth’s atmosphere but it is thick enough to have weather clouds and winds. Perhaps most importantly it does not protect against most harmful radiation, so we will have to always be aware of that” (Sharp). I sat back and listened to the conversations go back and forth but my mind was somewhere else. I guess you could say I was on another planet, or almost at least. The reality of the situation at hand started to sink in for me. I will be remembered in history as one of the first humans to ever set foot on mars. I looked around at the crew and thought to myself; these are the people that will go down in history with me, that I shall share an eternal bond with. The time has come to make our voyage back to Earth and I am not excited about it. I have grown fond of this place and the work we have done here. I find peace in the isolation from the other planet and it is very calming. I decide to share what is on my mind, “I don’t think I am going to make the trip back with you all.”
“Haha! Real funny Lahey!” Randy mocked me as he thought I was joking.
“I’m serious. I have done all I need to do back there, I am going to stay here and see it through” I reply.
Julian blurts out, “Forget it Lahey you aren’t staying, I won’t let you stay.”
“Jim is this really what you want?” randy asks
